Our Optimist Yachting so far..

Today we did not go Optimist Yachting, as the weather was too cold and it rained ALL day!

This gave us a chance to finish some of the writing we have been doing about our yachting. We chose the best or worst moment of our yachting or kayaking so far!

We have been learning lots this week on the water - and we have all challenged ourselves and improved heaps! We have been kayaking, we have learnt how to capsize the boats (and turn them back over safely!), how to be safe on the water, how to rig the yachts (including the knots) and we've shown ALL of our Mahora Values!

Here is some of our writing:
(We will post more as we finish our editing!)

Kaila

It all started off like this… “This is sooo relaxing” I said “yeah it is isn't it” Grace, my buddy, agread. BANG! SWOOP! “What was that?” Grace asked “THE MAINSHEET!” I screamed “OH NO” Grace shrieked, “what are we going to do?” Me and Grace held onto the boom, i used the tiller to steer our way to the closest island with an adult. “Lift the centreboard, lift the centreboard.” Grace lifted the centreboard, luckily she had lifted it just in time. “Are sails broken?” I asked the closest parent “could you please help us?” “Here, I'll just tighten this, oh sorry girls this is as far as it goes”. “That's all right” so we went back on the beautiful sour, salty, water. Suddenly the wind blew  me and Grace all the way to the other side of the lagoon. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Grace got out of the yacht and tried to pull me in but I blew away “save me, Grace!” Then I grabbed the mainsheet and I did it! I did it myself “I'm doing it, holy COW!” It was like I was flying, but sitting down. SCRAPE! I had not lifted the centreboard in time.

Kieana

Tuesday was the worst day ever. I got capsized by my buddy Cortez! It was a very cloudy but warm day when he did it. The teacher had asked me to help Cortez do kayaking so I said “yes” then we slipped into the kayak and did a lap of the pond and back. He got a little bit cheeky to me and finally he decided to capsize us. This is what I was thinking before he capsized us OH NO, OH NO, NO, NO,NO! He can't seriously do this … CAN he? NO this can’t happen the water is too cold! This is what thought after he capsized us! Yes,yes he can and he just did (spurt). This water is way too cold brr and gross I got some in my mouth  Cough! cough!

Grace

We (My buddy Kaila and I) were sailing across Pandora Pond in a optimist yacht when suddenly we heard a loud Splash! I spun round and saw a kayak flip over and the people inside being thrown into the water. “That was loud.” I said to Kaila.

Suddenly I heard a loud CLANG! Come from behind me. I looked up and saw the screw of the mainsheet dangling dangerously from the end of the rope. I tried to reach out and get it but it was too far away. The boom swung around over our heads as Kaila turned the yacht around. As it swung past my ear I swiftly grabbed it. My buddy quickly steered us towards the island.

As we reached it I promptly jumped out and a parent who was in a kayak nearby came over to us and helped me screw it back on. We speedily sailed back out onto the lagoon to practice some more.

LiamDay 1

As we get in the kayak I smell the yucky salt water going up my nose. Jordan was steering the kayak and I was navigating where to go in the kayak . We only did one lap because I wasn't very confident.
When we got back to shore it was time for yachting Jordan and I went in the yacht together. As we were sailing I yelled worriedly “Take us back to shore!"

Benji

“Ok Mrs B ready to launch” I thought to myself.  I went out a little bit in the yacht it was freaky.  I was on the tiller. I had two choices get out or go further!  I was really nervous!  I chose out!  Then I watched the yachters.  I picked a sailor to go with today it is Cairo. Me and Cairo went out with Mrs Beaver holding the yacht. Yay!  I went around buoy 2 and 3 in the kayak. At the end of the day we got dressed and came back to school.

Our Shared Lunch

SHARED LUNCH

In Room 12, we have a wall that has DVD covers on it. When we get 25 DVD cases Room 12 gets to choose a task like free time or shared lunch and stuff like that. We chose SHARED LUNCH! Then the day finally came... Food everywhere, all on the tables, in the teachers office, EVERYWHERE! Now it was time to eat, and next thing you know the cupcakes were gone then the fruit was gone, then the lollies! It was SO good and I mean it.

Shared lunch

Last week on Friday we had a shared lunch because we had achieved our target with some DVD's. We had to have 25 and then we got a reward. Mrs Beaver used this app, it was a spinning wheel.
For our reward, everyone had an idea and then we wrote it down, and used the App. That's how we got the shared lunch - now we are starting over again we have already got four DVDs on the wall.

Swimming Sports Writing - old post!

Whoops, we just found this post in our drafts folder!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is some of Room 12's writing about the Swimming Sports and how we felt!

We were focusing on using adverbs and adjectives to add interest to our writing.

Grace
As I streamed through the water I could hear the crowds cheers ringing in my ears. I stared down at the clear rippling water as I dived down into it. The smell of chlorine sifted through my nostrils as I prepared to dive. Light blue water pushed around my fingers as I pulled my way through across it to the finish line. A small splash sounded behind me as I broke the surface for a breath. Hot sun shone on my back as I pulled myself through the water. Cheers erupted throughout the pool as I dived into the water. My heart pounded as I stepped up onto the side of the pool.

Mahora Schools Triathlon.....2016 - RATING:100% AWESOME!!!

Elite Triathlon

"Year 6 boys for the Elite tri" said Mrs Pearse into the microphone. The year 6 boys walked nervously up to where they waited for Mrs Pearse. "Take your marks, get set, GO!" yelled Mrs Pearse.  It went like that for the year 6 girls, next was year 5 girls and then lucky last year 5 boys (there was a jumbo heap of them).

Senior Triathlon

Year 5 and  6's went in two lines behind Neilah and Tihei. Second in the line was Alyx and Nathan.
Alyx dived into water like a dolphin diving from taking the breath above water. Oh, how amazing everything looked amazingly awesome. Swimming like a crazy crab taking very short breaths above water. Three lengths is all you had to do. Swimming hard out we made it to the end and tagged our next team member.

Room 12 loved it and everyone gave their best shot at it. Everyone should get an award for doing the best they could.

Brown Bag Biographies

Wow! What a busy day we have had!

Room 12 were given a task on Friday to complete a 'Brown Bag Biography'. In their brown bag they were to bring 5 items from home that were special to them. Today Room 12 shared their special items with their buddies, and some shared them with the whole class! There were lots of exciting things in their brown bags, and Room 12 were all able to explain why these items were special to them.

Today about 12 people shared, and there will be lots more to share on Tuesday and Wednesday. We saw people taking a risk to talk in front of an audience, and everyone learnt heaps more about each other!
A very excited Room 12 - keen to share their special things!
Nikora sharing with his buddy Monaro.
Leah and Kohnar sharing.

Here is a video of Room 12 sharing about our special items! Everyone was speaking clearly and you can see lots of people showing how we use our whole body to listen to others!

When we were sharing with the whole class, we even had some whanau who came in to help us out!
Monaro with some of his special 'items' and his Mum and Aunty!

All about room 12

All people like being in this class. Because we have a best teacher and awesome kids. In our class we have thinking buddies so every morning we have buddies and we go knee to knee. We talk about school stuff. Then when we are finished there is a reporter. A reporter has to stand up and talk about what the other person said to them. We have DVD stickers too, if we have 25 DVD stickers we earn a reward. the reward is to have a game or have free time in the pool or have a picnic. We have 9 DVDs so far.

Feathers to grow, feathers of life.

For the last few days we have been working hard on our feathers we are making for our korowai or cloak. We have been learning about designing symbols and choosing colours that represent something. We are each making feathers that represent us, or things about us. We have been concentrating and working hard. We know we need to be able to explain the reasons behind our designs. We are looking forward to seeing how our finished korowai looks!

Tuakana Teina time

Yesterday Miss Boaler and Room 5 came in to visit us after they had been on the Bike Track. They invited us to come to their class for some Buddy time.
This morning we went to Room 5 and had a very busy morning! We met our new buddies, we helped them with their reading, and then helped them to do some thinking about our school values.

Our Week 1 Art

This week we have been doing a lot of art. First we started on our beach art, then we did the Nogard. After that we did the Zentangles. Art has been the best thing about school for the last four days so far. Mrs beaver is awesome too, she is the best teacher ever.

Swimming

Today we went to the pools. "Wait here" said the teacher.

Then she got us to line up and have relay races. During the relay races we had to run to one side and back as quick as we could running and the first group that had all their people sitting down won.

After that we got to do what ever we want and have fun! It is so hot at the moment, it is nice to be able to go for a swim!

Welcome to 2016!

Well, 2016 has started off with a bang!

First thing this morning, I met a whole bunch of Mahora students and their parents - what a busy morning! It was great to meet so many of you.

After we had made some introductions we had our Monday Meet Up in the Hall, and then we went outside to release some balloons and party poppers.

It was fantastic to meet all of the new students in Room 12, as it was my first day at Mahora. What a fabulous group of learners Room 12 are.

We had lots of fun today - learning about each other, playing games and making ice cream. We have done a little bit of learning about our new values - and we will continue to develop this.

Thanks,
Tessa Beaver (Room 12 teacher)
Letting go of the balloons and party poppers

Some Room 12 boys reading in our 'beachy' library

Getting to know our classmates - using M & Ms

Making ice cream - working together, reading instructions and noticing what happened!
